At long last, I have a good answer for theatergoers hoping to catch dinner near Arena Stage on the Southwest Waterfront. It’s called Masala Art and it’s a spinoff of the Indian restaurant of the same name in Tenleytown.

Since mid-July, when the second restaurant made its debut, loyalists have had rich reasons to dine closer to home. One is chicken tikka, its moist nuggets elevated with basil and lime leaves. Another is a south Indian fish curry that gathers chunks of cobia in a turmeric-tinted coconut milk gravy. (The dark purple rind in the bowl is kokum, a fruit that imparts a pleasant sweet-sour note.) Tender baby eggplant draped in a thick cloak of pureed peanuts, sesame seeds and tamarind makes for a meaty vegetarian meal.
1101 Fourth St. SW. 202-554-1101. masalaartdc.com.
WashingtonPost.com,

"The food the three of us ordered was OK but a bit bland. The service, however, was creative. Our waiter got caught up with a difficult table that kept him from taking our order on a timely basis but the manager (I think) saw the situation and came over to take our order. I was impressed."

Under the direction of renowned chef José Andrés, Zaytinya offers an innovative mezze menu inspired by Turkish, Greek and Lebanese cuisines served up in a sleek and modern setting. Shared small plates, creative cocktails and unique Mediterranean wines make this spot one of DC’s top dining destinations.

"The food and service were excellent and special. The noise level is so high that conversation -- even with the waiter -- is difficult. The bar was crazy crowded, but nonetheless, the bartenders managed to serve people promptly. It is a great, but not relaxing, food and drink experience."

Bastille’s new home at the corner of North Fayette & Pendleton is on the street level of The Asher, Old Town’s chic new apartment building. Bastille offers a contemporary take on the classic French Brasserie with a mix of warm woods and cool green accents. With seating for 100 and an additional 40 on the courtyard patio, Bastille’s new venue will also offer private and semi-private dining and an all-day café menu.
Fans of Bastille can expect the unique seasonal menus with which the Chefs Poteaux have become synonymous. Sourced from sustainable produced, local ingredients, the menu offers modern Parisian cuisine with classic inspirations. The chefs also feature international influences from the various ethnic neighborhoods of Paris.
