Featuring sweeping views of the Elizabeth River from the waterfront ballroom, terrace, and herb garden, VINTAGE KITCHEN has quickly become a community favorite. Burled wood floors, black leather benches, and the patina of a copper bar provide a relaxing and elegant setting for award-winning modern cuisine, simply prepared and stylishly presented, using the freshest local and regional produce in season, with a focus on artisan-crafted Virginia wines, cheeses, and micro-brewed beers. The area’s most discriminating clientele dine in an exclusive private library and digital theater with a backstage look into the kitchen, by appointment or invitation only, where daily 7-course bespoke tasting menus are offered graciously by hometown Chef/Owner Phillip Craig Thomason.

"We went for Norfolk's Restaurant Week - 3 courses for $30. We each had the Caesar salad. It had a hint of hot pepper spice shredded cheese, melted bits of sharp cheddar and great croutons. For our entree, we had the shrimp creole. For a change, it came with a yellow rice that resembled couscous. The sauce had tiny bursts of dried lemon. For dessert, I had the lemon cake with a hint of lavender. It was presented in a Ball jar with layers of fresh fruit and whipped cream. Hubby had something with chocolate. Everything was great! Every table in the main dining area has a view of the Elizabeth River."

"Mom had the Atlantic salmon. A good-sized serving and was cooked to order with a balsamic reduction glaze. Served over squash and haricot verts. I had the almond encrusted scallops. So yummy; wish there was another scallop on the plate! Served over spinach couscous with a cream sauce made of white chocolate and bananas. So subtle, but soooo good. Husband had the mahi mahi special that he thoroughly enjoyed. And everything was presented so nicely on the plate. Mom and I split the apple pie served in puff pastry with the creamiest vanilla gelato we've ever had."

"Husband had one of the appetizer specials - pork belly over cheese grits & red eye gravy. It was great. He then had the delmonico steak special - 16oz. with grilled asparagus & wasabi mashed potatoes. He said it was pretty good. I had the shrimp étouffée. It came with crawfish over basmati rice. It was $25, thinner than I like, not much rice; more like a thick soup than an entree. It was overly spicy, too. I had noted on the reservation that it was my husband's birthday, but the restaurant didn't acknowledge it."

"Whew, good thing we had a reservation, as they line up to get a table. Lots of waitstaff hustling between tables and very loud; made it seem frantic. Our waiter initially took care of us: got our drinks, took our orders, brought us delicious bread, then it took a while for our dinners to come. Once he came & said they were coming right up, but then we saw him setting tables, talking to the bar staff, etc. Our entrees were eventually brought to us by another server. Husband had the paella: black cod & squid in a slightly spicy/smoky tomatoey rice. I had the salmon done Mediterranean style with 3 types of olives, sliced sweet onions with a dollop of mashed potatoes. Very good. We skipped dessert, figuring it would take too long."

"We took advantage of the great weather and sat outside. There's lots of seating to choose from. Our waitress was so friendly & peppy on a Saturday morning. Husband had the eggs breakfast. How great to have bacon AND sausage. Two pieces of whole grain toast and very good home fried potatoes. I had the eggs rancheros. No beans for me. A soft tortilla, smothered in soft scrambled eggs, topped with another soft tortilla. With a dollop of guacamole, tomato salsa, drizzled with sour cream and chipotle sauce. Oh my, it was SO good, best I'd ever had."

"I had the half roasted chicken. It came with feta, balsamic and tomato runner beans. The dish was so delicious. Husband had the Piglet shoulders with veggies. The cheesecake was crazy good - one a biscotti crust, wrapped in layers of phylo then served slightly warm. How decadent, but so good! It's been on their menu for 20 years."

"When we first walked in the restaurant, we knew we were in for a treat. Beautiful decor; all black and white with dark wood. And the stained glass ceiling..... I had the day's quiche - a light vegetable in a delicious, buttery crust. It came with a side salad of leafy greens and a champagne dressing. My husband had the ham and cheese sandwich with an egg on top. Great whole grain grilled bread, good amount of ham, sliced thinly and cheese. Husband had a hard time finishing it, as fries came with it. We split the poached apple, that came with orange sherbet, cinnamon meringue on a thin almond biscuit. Ooooo la la."

Designed by the renowned architects Knox & Elliot and built in 1891, The Blake House is one of the last standing heritage structures in Toronto mixing late 19th century Victorian and Second Empire architecture. Its first owner the Honourable Edward Blake was the second premier of Ontario and leader of the federal liberal party between 1878-1887 . He was also the founder of the law firm known today as Blake, Cassels & Graydon. At that time, Jarvis street was a tree lined boulevard of stately mansions as displayed on our wall stencils and pictures. Leading Canadian families such as the Cawthras, Masseys, and Gooderhams were among Blake's neighbours. The home remained in the Blake family until 1917. Today, Old homes have been restored to their past glory while new high rise developments have added a contemporary edge. In the same vein, The Blake House invites you to take in the history while sitting on our sunny patio having a local pint or inside by the original wood burning fireplace

"Nice setting in a heritage house. We split the special salad made of heirloom tomatoes and feta over colorful lettuce and a light herbal dressing. Husband had the lamb shanks with creamy asparagus risotto. The meat fell of the bone - so tender. I had the beef stout pie. It was the best I'd ever had: lots of meat, thick gravy with minced onion and carrots, baked with a thick phylo pastry top. Served piping hot with a serving of mashed potatoes. We split the toffee bread pudding - so good. Great selection of beers and wine. On nice days/evenings it would be so nice to eat outdoors."

"Husband had the skirt steak and fries. This cut of steak was much thicker than what we normally see. I had the whitefish with veggies & corn salsa. The fish was spiced just right and the assorted veggies were de-lish. My husband had the creme brûlée. Good-sized serving, creamy and we loved the orange zest added to it. Awesome selection of beers."
