John's Grill has been a San Francisco tradition since 1908. This historic restaurant is one of the city's oldest and most famous and is a favorite of celebrities who enjoy great steaks, expertly prepared fresh seafood with excellent service and a one of a kind atmosphere. John's Grill was a setting in author Dashiell Hammetts, The Maltese Falcon. The restaurant has earned many tributes: it has been chosen as one of the 10 best by Esquire and featured in Gourmet Magazine. <br />Live jazz nightly in the upper level dining room.<br /><br />ZAGAT RATED: Food 26 / Decor 24 / Service 25 / Cost $44<br /><br />"Step back in time” at this circa-1908 Downtown “landmark”, where “solid steakhouse fare" and "strong drinks" draw “tourists and locals alike"; "one of the last old-style SF eateries", it’s also renowned as a "Dashiell Hammett hangout" (and a setting in The Maltese Falcon.)”<br /><br />Zagat Rates John's Grill - #1 Steakhouse in Downtown San Francisco!!!

"This was my first time at John's Grill, don't know why it took so long! It's a San Francisco tradition and the walls are adorned with signed photos of every politician and celebrity in town (or passing through). It is also the official site for Dashell Hammet's Maltese Falcon (which resides on the second floor, it was once stolen and returned with great fanfare). I had Sam Spade's favorite: grilled lamb chops, baked potato, sliced tomatoes, reveling in the fictional character and his exploits. The food is basic and good, well-prepared, nothing off the charts, but you have to go to experience the old San Francisco flavor and ambiance. It's one of the genuine old time haunts like Sam's and Tadich's, and not to be missed."

"Celadon is one of my favorites in downtown Napa and it never disappoints. My only concern is deciding what to have: I love the small plates (two are enough for a meal) and the salads are scrumptious as is the daily soup offering. All that before I even get into the entree section of the menu or the daily specials, it's always a quandary deciding which luscious thing to have....Oh, and then there's dessert......"

La Note is an authentic Provençal restaurant in the heart of downtown Berkeley. Traditional breakfast and lunch bistro fare are combined with rustic Provençal dinners in a warm and charming atmosphere. The restaurant's owner won an award in excellence in 1998 for "outstanding storefront improvements" and rehabilitation of its beautiful 1875 building. The stunning interior patio is open April - October.

"I've always enjoyed the food at 54 Mint but my latest experience leads me to say I won't be returning. We waited over one hour for any food at all; the service was horrid and inept. Never again."

"Cole's is a favorite downtown Napa destination, a steak house that serves wonderful seafood dishes and a killer lobster bisque. Not being a meat eater I've not had the pleasure (which I hear from others is considerable) of their aged meats grilled to perfection served with wonderful sides such as creamed spinach, lovely salads and baked potatoes. The cocktails are amazing also. All in all a truly great dining experience!"

Morimoto's contemporary Japanese menu infuses traditional dishes with Western ingredients and preparation techniques. His seasonal and ever-changing selection of raw fish preparations will feature the freshest seafood available as well as locally grown fruits and vegetables from supporting farmers. Morimoto's signature offerings include Toro Tartare, presented in a shallow wooden tray with condiments including crème fraîche, wasabi, avocado, nori paste, chives, crispy rice, and dashi-soy. Tuna Pizza made with raw tuna, anchovy aioli, and jalapeno; Morimoto Sashimi, a terrine of seared Toro, smoked salmon, barbequed eel, tuna and Hamachi served with five different sauces in pipettes.

"I didn't check "notable wine list" because Morimoto specializes in upscale sakes. It is an educational experience to read the offerings and luckily the staff can be very helpful with selection and tasting. Food is always wonderful and fresh and I do enjoy going there. The surroundings can be cold and noisy, however, because of the concrete floors."

"The Buckeye is a Marin tradition dating back for years (it seems like generations!). The food is somewhat predictable but nicely prepared and the ambiance is perfect for a family gathering or a quiet lunch by the fire. I always recommend it to visitors because it combines the best of Northern California: good local food in lovely surroundings. Plus, valet parking!"

Aged for almost 30 years in the Napa Valley… Since its beginnings as a local gathering spot over 29 years ago, Mustards Grill has blossomed into a destination for all who appreciate memorable food, superb wines and a warm welcome. Mustards food is Chef/Owner Cindy Pawlcyn’s mix of American regional dishes with global influences. The list of “Way Too Many Wines” represents the best from appellations throughout California and the New World. Mustards is an American Grill, featuring flavors from around the globe. The wood-burning grill produces such favorites as Cindy’s famous Mongolian Pork Chop, chipotle –rubbed Quail, and the ½ pound Niman Ranch hamburger. The oakwood smoker fills the restaurant with aromas of BBQ baby back ribs and tea-smoked Peking duck. Specialties include Seared Ahi Tuna on sesame crackers and Crispy Calamari tossed with curried slaw. The eclectic wine list features hard to find gems from California, the American Northwest, & South America.

"I've been enjoying Mustard's since it opened (I believe in 1983) and it never disappoints. The space is small and waiting for a table is chaotic, especially in the winter when waiting outdoors is not an option. A reservation is a must because it is a very popular wine country destination. Although there have been minor changes to the roadhouse menu over the years, the quality has never faltered: every item is stellar and expertly prepared. The problem is, however, deciding among the many luscious items, one can only eat so much at one seating. Luckily, I live in the area so I can visit as often as I like!"

Enjoy spectacular views of the new Carquinez Bridge and serene San Pablo Bay while dining on the lushly planted patio with heated and cooled cabanas and twinkling lights. Unique weekend brunch with specialty cocktails. Specialties include 100% USDA Certified Prime, Prime Rib and whole Dungeness crab. Unique dining rooms for an intimate dinner or a large group. "We may have a funny name but we're dead serious about our food!!"
