Located in the United Brotherhood of Carpenters headquarters off the wide, open expanse of the National Mall, Charlie Palmer Steak is dedicated to another fine master craft: big, bold American food. Under the direction of Executive Chef Jeffery Russell, the menu stars the best American artisan beef cuts like an aged Angus Rib-eye "Cowboy" steak as well as updated seafood classics such as the Iced Shellfish Platter of lobster, shrimp, king crab, and oysters. Underscoring the patriotic menu, Palmer's innovative wine cube—which appears to be floating on water—features 3,500 bottles of exclusively American wine and over 600 selections.

"I went to Charlie Palmer during Restaurant Week with some colleagues. The RW menu was extremely limited. I had the parsnip soup which was very good tasting, but had pieces of root vegetables that were barely cooked. The tri tip steak has decent flavor, but was tough. The portions were also really small. The beef ragout topping was like a finely chopped watery pot roast on top of the tri tip. Entirely forgettable. Would have been much better with a nice sauce of some sort. Dessert was a complete disappointment. The pecan tart was bitter. I left most of it behind. I really felt like Charlie Palmers picked inexpensive food that would give them the highest profit margin instead of offering a meal that was representative of their menu. Perhaps in the future they should consider offering better cuts of meat, but with smaller portion sizes. The service was also poor. We never saw a breadbasket and one of my colleagues was brought the wrong appetizer. The meal gave me no incentive to return to Charlie Palmer in the future. If you are looking for an upscale place near the Hill, go to Bistro Bis."
