Roastbeef's Reviews

Blue Plate Oysterette was inspired by East Hampton summer lobster bakes and mouthwatering lunches at Montauk’s favorite roadside eateries. With influences like Pearl Oyster Bar and Mary’s Fish Camp in New York, Oysterette serves lunch and dinner seven days a week with a menu straight out of the seafood shacks you find on the East Coast. Chunky, overflowing lobster rolls, buckets of steamed clams in broth so flavorful that bread demands to be dunked, clam chowder, mussels in broth, ceviche, and raw shellfish so fresh you can smell the ocean. Filling the void in the Westside restaurant scene for a casual, beachy, seafood restaurant and buzzing neighborhood vibe appealing to both surfers and studio heads.

"The oysters are a treat, and have always been so. But this is one of the few consistencies here. The turnover in staff seems astonishing: never a familiar face in sight. Maybe this explains the surliness of the greeters, who seem to have little pride in their work. And the waiting staff smiled a lot, but weren't focused. Even the wines change - they used to have a fabulous and well-priced Quincy, which was perfect for much of the seafood - but it's gone, replaced by lesser and more expensive wine. Our food arrived overcooked after too long under the hot lamp (mine) and cold (my wife's). It was a gem of a restaurant - worth putting up with the really absurdly squashed-together tables. That's no longer so. I guess it'll be gone in a year."

"The waiters and serving staff were in slightly short supply. The real problem was the lady greeting at the front desk, who was without charm, and not at all good at her job. When we arrived she was nowhere to be seen. We waited patiently behind other couples on arrival. When she eventually appeared, she looked at us all coldly, didn't apologise for our long wait, and did her job without any joy. We were shown to our table and she gave us one menu, promising to return with another: she didn't do that, and we never saw her again. Food was good - especially the spaghetti with lobster, and the octopus salad. A shame that the greeter was so unhelpful."

"This is one of the most expensive restaurants in LA, but that's fine when everything is up to standard. While some of the food was outstanding - the steaks were out of this world - not all of it was: the selection of sorbets ranged from the good, through to unpalatable mush. Our waitress was very hit and miss: we kept asking for the second bottle of white wine for our table, and she repeatedly refused to bring it: odd. Our table was excellent: for four people, you do need to be in one of the central areas, as round the edges this place packs them in to such an extent, you become part of your neighbors' conversation and evening."

This beachfront cafe boasts indoor and outdoor seating, a causal but sophisticated bar and fresh California dishes from Seared Ahi Tuna and Shaved Prime Rib to the popular Lemon Ricotta Pancakes. Open early morning to late evening, with an impressive Happy Hour, savory weekend brunches and Wednesday Farmer's Market dinners, Coast is the place to dine, drink and relax at the beach.

"This is one of the best hotel restaurants - casual, bright, but with an extremely good staff, and with great food and wine. It's a treat every time I go there."

"We were placed on a table in the bar area, for dinner. We had booked in the restaurant. The music was so loud and intrusive, our evening was completely compromised. This is a pity, especially at $100 per head."

"This used to be better - more glamorous, more vibrant. It has now become quite ordinary. We used to get here once every couple of months. If it hadn't been for my daughter requesting we go this time, I would have quietly forgotten it. I won't be rushing back."
