LindaMcG's Reviews

Ariana Grinblat, a Russian recording artist, has decided it's time to update Russian cuisine in America, which, she contends, "has remained stagnant for 100 years." A pickle salad with Meyer lemon-yogurt dressing, cabbage stuffed with lobster, and quail in a walnut-pecan sauce gives you some idea. The chef is Vitalii Kovalev from St. Petersburg. The softly lighted room has a bar with infused and aged vodkas. Orson Salicetti (Apotheke) showcases the understated spirit of vodka in multiple facets, including aging it in barrels, infusing it with sweet and savory herbs, and pairing it with fresh fruit. The skylight room with an exposed brick wall is the hidden gem of the space -- perfect for long, intimate dinners.

"We came here for my birthday and was not disappointed! The bartenders were friendly and explained the different specialty drinks (I had the Pear cocktail at the bar which was amazing). The dining room was beautifully lit (I'm all about the lighting in a restaurant) and the piano player was terrific. Service was friendly, attentive and the food was outstanding. The best blinis we've ever had and the caviar was perfectly served with crème fresh. The cured sturgeon small plate and lobster salad was beautiful and filling. Almost couldn't finish our duck and sturgeon raviolis. The sauces they came with were delicious. Loved it!"

"My husband and I went to Chakra for my birthday and had a lovely dinner. Daniel was our waiter and he couldn't have been nicer. He knew the menu very well and made nice suggestions. It had been several years since we went there and I remember it being very loud and the food was ok for the price. But I think whatever changes they made since then, it's greatly improved. I read several reviews that were not happy about the service and was pricy but we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! Thank you, Daniel!"

The last of its kind near 42nd St., Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem. A tribute to legendary Josephine Baker, this Parisian bistro with live music and tantalizing menu exudes theatrical panache. One of New York's most romantic restaurants, a bit of Montmartre on 42nd St., the landmark jewel sparkles with an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. The eclectic menu reinvents the traditional cuisine of the French bistro in an explosion of tantalizing flavor. Jean-Claude and Jarry Baker are your warm and welcoming hosts who treat you as family whether you come before the show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung-with every shade of skin on earth and indeed you feelthe magic of Chez Josephine.

"Restaurant Week menu was perfect, served by wonderful staff. Delicious and we were sitting next to the piano player who never stopped and the music was great! Perfect meal, perfect location, perfect day/nite in the City. Escargot was buttery and delicious, soft shell crab was yummy and dessert was light, couldn't ask for more!"

"We had a Father's Day brunch and had made reservations but they only take reservations to sit inside. That was ok because we were meeting people that we hadn't seen in a long time and wanted to talk as the outside was very loud. We all (4) ordered Bloody Mary's and the usual style of Eggs Benedict and none of us liked their recipe. We thought it was overpriced at $18. The Hollandaise sauce indicated it was lemony on the menu but we didn't taste any lemon flavor at all. It was ok but not great."

Our speciality is sauton ceramic cooking where seafood is simmered in its own juices and blended with ingredients.

"We went there on our last night in Williamsburg with my family. There were multiple problems with the service due, we believe, to either a waiter being new or maybe moved from busboy to waiter as he forgot many things however he was nice: (no salad for one of the dinners that included one). We had to ask other waiters for horseradish, butter, etc. He didn't know his food items as he mixed up the two kinds of fish for two people and we had to reorder, then they ran out of the replacement dish and ordered a third meal. It was a 2 1/2 hour dinner by the time we left; however, the manager and one of the waiters who prepared the flaming desserts came to the rescue. Management ended up giving us dessert & coffee and credited us one meal."
