Recently moved to its new location, Cafe Noir, part bistro, part bar, has become a cherished institution. With its Mediterranean ambiance and reputation for hip world music, Cafe Noir has been the location for a diverse crowd of "in the knows" for over Eighteen years.

"Early dinner..only two other tables at first. Started with oysters on half shell at a dollar apiece! Nicely served with lemon, cocktail and mignonette sauce. Then had the charred octopus..Very tasty, perfectly cooked, and attractively presented. Dessert menu tempting but had had some dental work so just went with a scoop each of espresso and cinnamon ice cream .
As the meal progressed the place got a few more guests, the lights dimmed, and candles glowed..nice ambiance. Also nicely priced glasses of sauvignon blanc."

"Pre NYCB dinner. Many choices, a few specials also priced above most menu items. Shared a Caesar salad , came in bowl, not divided, used our bread plates and forks to divide.. Unremarkable as was the bread and butter in foil pats. Had to track down a server(they were running all over except when you needed something!) for fresh ground pepper. Had a chopped clam pie, didn't realize it would have red sauce..okay. Friend said her fish special was okay also but not worth the higher price. First choice for wine, a Joanne Prestiage, Premium? separate smaller list of about 6 wines, not available.
Lady Gaga singing with Tony Bennett was nice background to dinner..."

"Had a luncheon at work so stuck to shared appetizers. Fried green tomatos were goo but not fantastic. Crispy curried oysters could have been a bit more crispy but properly oozy inside..probably hard to perfect esp. since we ordered then to be served same time as crab croquettes..which were a bit dry and could have used more sauce..the potato salad that came with them however was spot on delicious and a good size portion!
It was first nite of Rosh Hashanah so not very busy..which made the slow service at the beginning a bit difficult to understand..but the server made up for it during the rest of the meal."

"When I said my res was changed from 2 to 1 was seated at a table in rear of room..across from waiter station. Felt forgotten by waiter at times esp when my first course of gazpacho was served by runner and I had no spoon! Took some time to get anyone's attention then waiter said "no problem" well I should hope so! But gazpacho was delicious..and tuna tacos were tasty as well. Chocolat tort with corn gelato was okay not fab as dessert should be...."

This Old Chelsea food hall opened in 1999 and is a New York original. The Red Cat's combination of come-as-you-are sensibilities and straightforward, satisfying, and occasionally irreverent cuisine instantly establish the restaurant as a favorite with New York diners. Mike Cooperman runs the kitchen that's become famous for such whimsical creations as Quick Sauté of Zucchini with toasted almonds and pecorino; Scottish Salmon Crudo with sea beans and trout caviar; and Long Island Duck Beast with farro, dates, mascarpone, almonds and madeira. Such dishes only add to the restaurant's mystique as a place for all seasons, styles and spirits. "Had a lovely meal yet again. Good choices on menu..started with the filet mignon tartare, was a bit surprised when ii arrived because I read tartare but was thinking carpacchio! Have ever only had beef tartare in Europe, nicely spiced and tasty for first USA tartare!
Next was beautifully prepamed blue fish with good mashed potatoes and succotash. The dessert, cherry vanilla ice cream sandwich, was simply divine..only sorry I could not finish!
Wish there was a Red Cat type place on the UES!"

"Went again for restaurant week..was not the same seamless oasis as last visit. Started at reception when the guy(I think main person had stepped away)got all flustered when I told him I would be solo rather than 2. After that first two courses were a bit rushed...but delicious, mushroom/truffle oil croquettes and paella. Chocolat pot du crème smooth and tasty.
2 tables of 6 seemed to throw things off a bit....
But a lovely space , large enough to perhaps not sit the larger tables in the same area..and nice menu."

"Had a lovely lunch in the garden with 4 friends. The $21.99 dollar 2 course menu is not on line or posted outside but is a good deal. $ of us had the tarte flambee to start..like a flatbread, very thin crust pizza with cheese, bacon and tomatoes was light and delicious..and large! Prosciutto and melon also a good choice. Then 3 quenelles..one big one with a great sauce and rice and two..very chikeny chicken crepes!
The food was delicious..and we all travel to France frequently, setting and service lovely!"
