Chuckie's Reviews

History has been written inside the walls of the Wharf, with its 1790's style architecture featuring original wood columns and beams that are charred black from a Civil War fire. Since 1971, satisfied diners have been heading to The Wharf in Old Town for whole Maine lobster, local soft shell crabs and prime steaks. The restaurant has recently been renovated and remodeled and the menu updated to include many contemporary seafood items along with their traditional Chesapeake Bay creations.

"We have eaten many times at the Wharf over the years and have never been disappointed in the food or service. Located in Old Town Alexandria the walls are brick or wood and ceilings are low giving an atmosphere of a tavern centuries ago. This time my wife enjoyed crab cakes while I had the cod. Both were well prepared and delivered hot to the table. The server checked back several times during the meal to make sure everything is satisfactory. Prices are moderately high but fit the quality and size of portions. Truly a great local restaurant specializing in seafood."

Les Halles is the home base of Chef-at-large Anthony Bourdain, author of the best selling Kitchen Confidential (Bloomsbury, May 2000) host of the TV Show, No Reservations. Bourdain is also the co-author of the Brasserie Les Halles Cookbook (Bloomsbury, 2004) with proprietor Philippe Lajaunie.

Bustling and lively, Brasserie Les Halles is a typical Parisian brasserie serving fresh and simple dishes of France’s everyday cuisine.

"We booked three restaurants through Open Table during a recent visit to Manhattan. Les Halles Park Avenue was our favorite. We went on Christmas evening and at 7 p.m. the restaurant was very busy. Our wait was short and as the meal progressed and our waiter was overwhelmed by the crowd, the manager came by and took our food orders. (The initial greeting and furnishing of water and alcoholic drinks was quite prompt) While we were waiting entrees a drink server came by and offered and brought us a second round. The intervention of the manager and this drink server made us feel more at home and when the food came we were quite pleased. We will definitely return to this restaurant on a future visit to NYC."

"The Ambassador was elegant and served a great lunch buffet for us on Christmas Day. While the staff was attentive in removing empty plates and refilling water glasses, the missing ingredient was a server greeting us at the table and offering a beverage and a wine list. Whenever we wanted something not provided by the helpers, there was no one nearby to ask or request. The buffet was pricey but worth the cost due to the high quality and variety of food. We would try a dinner there but probably not return for the brunch."

"The salads were excellent and my cod was the best prepared I had ever eaten. My wife was not as pleased with her risotto which was under cooked and lacked the creaminess of a great risotto. Niles is located near Madison Square Garden so would be a great place for an after event dinner."
