"A friend and I ate at La Vara for Valentine's Day dinner so the menu was fixed price. My friend is a vegetarian and I'm not (they had a menu for each us), but several of the dishes were veg anyway, which is fine by me. and my friend eats seafood (my menu had one dish with seafood). So we were able to share almost all the dishes. Everything was really, really tasty. My Cuban friend gave a two thumbs up to the croquetas and even tried - and liked - beets for the first time in her life. We loved everything. I'd go back more often if I didn't live 250 miles away!"

An American Anthem to Life + Table

With his motorcycle license plate “BRAISE,” he is seeking out good fortune in the bounty and thoughtfulness of American farming, and bringing this centuries-old craft into the spotlight at ~Gypsy Soul~. This goes beyond farm-to-table. It is about the gathering of people and how each of us in this great community is connected by this common thread when we dine together. It is the conversation of food with guests and the love affair with it.

The menu features American fare both classic and contemporary, strong in flavor. Talented Cheftender Bryan Tetorakis from Rogue 24 designed the entire beverage repertoire. From local spirits from around the Mid-Atlantic and South to wines and cans of beer, there is a libation for all to imbibe on while enjoying Chef’s cuisine.

"Our first time here and the food was really good. The menu changes often, but one of the only things there from the beginning is the chicken skins appetizer. Get it! Also, if there's a starter with sea urchin and marrow, do not be afraid. Also very good. If you want a cocktail but you don't know what to order, ask for the worksheet they have, and you can tell the bartender what you like and he will surprise you (within your parameters). It's not inexpensive, but we're looking forward to going back soon, and I wouldn't hesitate to order anything on the menu, because I'd be confident that it will be delicious."

"I don't know if it's gotten better or if just took a few times to win me over. I've been with a group of about 15 before, and recently I was there for lunch with a friend and there was also a big group. My friend and I enjoyed a lunch, with a few things on the extensive lunch menu that you don't normally find on every other menu in town. She had a grilled fish (don't remember the kind) BLT, which was pretty big. I had a soup and salad combo. Four soups are listed as your choices for the combo on the regular menu, but I was allowed to pick the soup off the specials menu, which I did. I had a soup with lots of lump crabmeat, and a spinach salad with warm goat cheese - a nice hunk of cheese with a very crispy outside, sundried tomatoes, etc. In the past I've had the lamb lollipops which were very good, and the sweet potato fries are very good, too. I'd really like to try the venison burger. A decent selection of wines by the glass. Maybe this wouldn't stand out as much in the city, but for around here, we both agreed that this is better than the competition that everyone raves about. Plus, there's a bar, which the neighborhood sorely needs, and live piano music at night. Plenty of parking (unlike those competitors). I'll be back."

"Went for lunch and ordered tortilla soup because I hadn't had any in a while, and it was cold, and I really like tortilla soup. It was the strangest thing. It was cream based and actually very thick. Tortilla soup is not supposed to be like that. Good thing I added in chicken because other than the chicken and a few strips of tortillas, I'm not sure there was anything else in there. It was a bit spicy, but also way too salty. My friend had cheese enchiladas. I had a bite of hers, and it really wasn't anything to write home about. My first time there, and not sure I'd go back unless it wasn't lunchtime and I could have a margarita."
