A16 restaurant is named for the highway connecting Campania to Puglia and the menu is rooted in the rustic traditions of these lively southern Italian regions. The wine list highlights southern Italian varietals and over 40 wines are available by the glass and half-bottle carafe. The bar features traditional and modern cocktails and a wide selection of amaro.

"This is good for a nice meal before going to theater. We were out in plenty of time. The food was on the old-fashioned side, but quite good. The grilled artichoke salad was a highlight.
P.S. I think pre-theatre should be a category under No. 2."

 Belli Osteria
Belli Osteria
Located in the heart of Downtown Berkeley, Belli Osteria is a quaint and casual place to enjoy sumptuous dishes made with many local and seasonal ingredients. Our osteria began with the dream of creating a locale whose focus is not just Italian inspired dishes, but pastas and raviolis that are made artisanally and in-house. We take special pride in sourcing ingredients that are local, and whenever possible, organic.

"Appetizers and salads are wonderful here. Great gazpacho, in particular. Pasta dishes are uneven although definitely ambitious. Gnocchi was leaden heavy, but other pasta dishes have been good. However, it is extremely difficult to get the bill, and then pay within a reasonable amount of time -- even when you have explained that you are going to theater."

"Eating outdoors is the best thing this restaurant has going for it. The food is good, not great. The waiter misinformed us about the size of the smaller vs larger portion of a dish (they are nice enough to offer two sizes of several entrees), so that we ended up overordering and not finishing one of our dishes. When you are used to a city vibe (Berkeley, Oakland, San Francisco) and exciting food, this doesn't really cut it."

"We have been so happy with the food each time we have eaten here. Delicious vegetable rolls as an entree, great warm chive biscuits as an appetizer and their signature butterscotch pudding for dessert. However, the service, until we complained, was very slow -- and this was before they got busy."
