"Good food in a pleasant place in downtown South San Francisco. The owner is nice. Prices are reasonable, except I found the cocktails and wine to be on the high side."

"The food, service, and ambiance were all enjoyable. One thing I must also compliment the restaurant on is that though two of our party were 30 minutes late on a busy night, they held our table without any hassle."

CHIAROSCURO is contemporary restaurant that combines traditional values with a modern air. Inspired by the black and white films prominent during the Italian Neorealist movement of the 40’s and 50’s, CHIAROSCURO’s clients will experience a level of service that constitutes a class of its own and an atmosphere that will express a simple yet charming air. The design is reminiscent of a terrace on the Mediterranean Sea or a street in Rome and offers visual stimulus that sets it apart from the rest. The homemade pastas, bread, and a menu out of an Italian dream will draw you in by the succulent taste of rich dishes that will leave your palate begging for more.

"The food was very good - not great enoug h justify the price, however. The waiter was good too but the other services were not nearly as professional."

Step into Le Zinc and you will feel transported to a French Bistro in Paris with its beautiful antique zinc bar, cream tiled floors, dark wood bistro tables, wine cellar and warm lighting.
Chef-owner Max Braud offers an original menu of traditional favorites such as 'escargots and 'steak frites' as well as innovative tasting plates with influences from North Africa and Asia which are strongly prevalent in Parisian cuisine today.
Indulge in our 4 course Tasting Menu for $40 or our Classic 3 course Prix Fixe for $36.
From the bar select a delicious, great value bistro wine or splurge on a special grand cru. Over 20 wines, representing the main wine regions of France, are available by the glass and carafe.
Sip a glass of wine and watch the world go by from our sidewalk terrace or enjoy our sunny garden patio in the rear.
French-style Tapas dishes, as well as Cheese and Charcuterie platters, are served daily between lunch and dinner.
"The food we had was good. The service was good. The ambiance is fine, though it's a bit of an odd space in that the front room is dominated by a bar that seems not to be used while the tables are all pushed up against the wall, making you feel like you are in more of a hallway than a dining room; perhaps the back is better (though one would think the restaurant could make better use of the front). There is an outside sitting area, which I am sure would be very pleasant during the day.
Aside from that, it was enjoyable, and I am glad we went, with only one exception. I thought the wine I ordered by the glass was significantly overpriced due to the amount served. I received about 3 ounces; the standard is at least 5."

The symbol of the neighborhood Cantina is an integral part of Latin American culture. Cantinas have been cherished by local communities for generations, providing a neutral space where all people can enjoy outstanding food and signature cocktails with their families and friends.

At La Urbana, we hope to respectfully reinterpret this time-honored tradition by using sustainable ingredients in a contemporary way that represents our Latin roots and global culture while continuing to push the boundaries of modern Mexican food.

¡Salud!

"We shared the octopus, ceviche, chicken, and corn. All were very good. We also had three cocktails between us, each of which was excellent. Seriously, the bartender here is a wizard."

"I've always liked this restaurant. My wife loves it. I have never understood how it managed to morph from a former pizza parlor at the far end of Noe Valley to a place of cult status [I have a friend who travels from Taiwan just to eat here!]. The food is good, but that seems crazy. One of the things that I most liked about the restaurant was the graciousness of the hostess, one of the owners I believe. She has been replaced by someone of only limited competence (hence my reduction of score for service). Otherwise, the food is pretty much the same - authentic Sardinian food and wines. The authenticity is what makes it special, I suppose, in an era when restaurants compete to see what bizarre combinations of foods they can think up."

"My first meal here was excellent. This second one was disappointing. The food seemed inauthentic and fussy, as though they have lost their roots in making really excellent roman food. I may try again but did not think the meal I had justified the price.
The service was weird too. We had one server at the start, then another introduced herself as our server. Ten minutes later yet a third said she was our server. Overall it worked but the lack of consistence made it difficult to determine who to ask for assistance."
