Originally founded in 1893, Schroeder’s longstanding history has made the Bavarian inspired beer hall a favorite of San Francisco for the past 120 years. With a new page beginning in Schroeder’s history, the restaurant is reinventing the way San Francisco views German Fare. Chef Manfred Wrembel’s passion for the cuisine of his ancestry and love of California’s seasonal styling is embodied in the dishes he creates. The restaurant’s décor pays homage to its Bavarian Heritage with Herman Richter murals, Historical Wall of Steins, and the original millwork throughout. A rosewood bar stretching the length of the beer hall with 22 German beers on tap is sure to captivate the thirsty. Prost!

"The room is beautiful - wonderfully reimagined in a manner that enhances the old features but makes it seem fresh, in a style that does indeed feel like a classic German beer hall. The beer is great. There's an excellent selection, many German, all served correctly. The service was excellent too. Our waitress could not have been nicer. Sadly, the food was an entirely different matter. It truly was horrible. Honestly, it was among the worst meals I have had anywhere. Granted, we only had two dishes (the duck pastrami "wrap" and sauerbraten on toast), but if those are representative this place is in trouble. It's a shame, because it could be so great. Until they get a new chef I plan to stick to the beer."

Chef & co-owner, Mario and his delightful wife, Stephanie, have a knack for making you feel as if they are cooking and serving just for you at this super-reasonable North Beach nook offering robust Southern Italian fare reminiscent of his native Naples; whether you’ve snagged an outdoor table or are in the small, casual interior, it delivers a pasta fix.

"I love the fact that this restaurant is truly Italian, and essentially unchanged for 25 years. They are not out to win any culinary awards, but deliver the classics at a very reasonable price and with true Italian flair. It's a funky, cozy little place, and that is its charm."

CHIAROSCURO is contemporary restaurant that combines traditional values with a modern air. Inspired by the black and white films prominent during the Italian Neorealist movement of the 40’s and 50’s, CHIAROSCURO’s clients will experience a level of service that constitutes a class of its own and an atmosphere that will express a simple yet charming air. "The food we had was good. The service was good. The ambiance is fine, though it's a bit of an odd space in that the front room is dominated by a bar that seems not to be used while the tables are all pushed up against the wall, making you feel like you are in more of a hallway than a dining room; perhaps the back is better (though one would think the restaurant could make better use of the front). There is an outside sitting area, which I am sure would be very pleasant during the day.
Aside from that, it was enjoyable, and I am glad we went, with only one exception. I thought the wine I ordered by the glass was significantly overpriced due to the amount served. I received about 3 ounces; the standard is at least 5."

"We shared the octopus, ceviche, chicken, and corn. All were very good. We also had three cocktails between us, each of which was excellent. Seriously, the bartender here is a wizard."

"I've always liked this restaurant. My wife loves it. I have never understood how it managed to morph from a former pizza parlor at the far end of Noe Valley to a place of cult status [I have a friend who travels from Taiwan just to eat here!]. The food is good, but that seems crazy. One of the things that I most liked about the restaurant was the graciousness of the hostess, one of the owners I believe. She has been replaced by someone of only limited competence (hence my reduction of score for service). Otherwise, the food is pretty much the same - authentic Sardinian food and wines. The authenticity is what makes it special, I suppose, in an era when restaurants compete to see what bizarre combinations of foods they can think up."
