Venus features the best of our local foodshed, from local farms, waters and ranches, served in warm and lovely style in the heart of Downtown Berkeley. A favorite dinner spot for theater goers, Venus devotes itself to local and organic purveyors, creating delicious Northern California style dishes. The wine list focuses on bio-dynamic, and sustainably farmed grapes, and a "New World" style of wine-making, where the fruit expresses itself. An open kitchen and banquette seating create a cozy vibe. Chef Amy Murray is a 15 year veteran of the organic, farm-to-table movement.

Menus are created each month to highlight the best of the season and evoke good appetites.

Venus also serves a unique brunch and lunch, and offers uncommonly good beer, wine and light cocktails.

We are happy to do small parties and buy outs, and tasty lunch catering.

"Our party of 4 found the service at Venus to be topnotch, professional, friendly, efficient, courteous, and the servers were completely familiar with the dishes and the wine. Our reservation was handled promptly, contrary to a few earlier reviews. The atmosphere is cozy and inviting. The menu, characterized as Organic farm-to-table, is not extensive, but is interesting and contains some great choices. Many of those choices are gluten-free. We chose the Prime Filet Mignon (a special this day), the Piri-Piri Chicken, roasted baby-back ribs, and The Butternut Squash Gnocchi. The Wine list is short and changes frequently. A cocktail special this evening was made with Sake and Blackcurrant and was outstanding. We also found prices to be quite reasonable. Venus is located in downtown Berkeley and near the UC campus. Street parking and parking in nearby lots can be difficult during University events. Our group was completely satisfied with our experience and will return soon."

Jeanne D'Arc is an elegant yet reasonably priced French restaurant located near Nob Hill and Union Square in the Cornell Hotel de France. Replete with tapestries, stained glass and artifacts, the decor celebrates the life and deeds of France's legendary heroine, Joan of Arc.

Founded by the Lambert family in 1972, the restaurant is a favorite of locals and visitors. Jeanne D'Arc offers a prix fixe menu and a cellar of well chosen California and Frence wines. The restaurant is perfect for before-curtain supper, a gathering of good friends, or romance with conversation.

"This is an absolutely beautiful, and very romantic restaurant, in the basement level of the Hotel Cornell de France. There are a number of nooks and crannies, archways, portals, etc. leading to private or semi-private dining spaces, all of which will add romance to the evening. Service is topnotch (we had Dan) with good knowledge and recommendations about the cuisine. The very friendly owner stops by to visit with the diners. And on some evenings there is live entertainment. On our visit it was an accordionist and French chantreuse. The food measures up to the surroundings and the price is one of the best bargains in town. It is prix fixe only – four courses for only $44!! And there are choices for each course. For our dinner we chose for entrees the lamb in puff pastry and the Coquilles St. Jacques. Both of these dishes were excellent. The wine list is not long, but is very well chosen, with a number of off-the-track French wines. This restaurant is not on most tourist radars yet, but may be soon."
