"Toma is tops on the customer reviewed sites for a reason -- it's definitely that good. In fact, I can't think of a thing to make it better than it was the night we were there. The romantic old world atmosphere is classy and lovely; made better by the seaside locale and views. While the space is small and tables were full, it never felt cramped or loud. Service was spot on; friendly, professional and unobtrusive. We had a great local pinot noir that was being featured that night, which paired wonderfully with the menu. And most importantly, every bite of food was perfect. This is the food we've come to expect in the best California restaurants -- fresh and inventive, yet true to the cuisine, in this case Italian/Mediterranean. I was amazed at how well every ingredient added to the complexity of each dish, without being lost or overwhelming. Portions are plentiful; the octopus starter is easily shared and it's difficult to save room for dessert.
Surprisingly, prices are reasonable for this area, for the quality provided, and for the popularity of the place. Make your reservations early if you can, but if you're last minute you may find (as we did) that res's open up around 8 as the evening progresses. I highly recommend Toma, and I wish I was there now!"

"California has so much to offer on the food (and drink) front, from haute cuisine to little stands and food trucks -- fare that is fresh, inventive and hard to duplicate anywhere else is the norm in California. So we were completely surprised to have such a humdrum meal in the heart of Palm Springs. Portions were ample and the menu is extensive, so I had an opportunity to taste 6 very different dishes and a few apps -- but all were examples of the kind of ordinary Italian restaurant food you'd find in anytown USA.
Service was average, as well. We never lacked for anything when we wanted it, but waitstaff was not very knowledgeable or polished, and there was plenty of confusion about the wine list, pricing, etc. And even though we were outside, we were actually overwhelmed by one waiter's cologne -- which should be a no-no and definitely something I've never experienced before.
The outside dining is very comfortable and attractive, romantic even -- and seats quite a few people. We were seated at a nice table on time even though it was a busy night in Palm Springs and many restaurants were already unavailable when we booked this reservation. Still, it did become crowded here as they seated many walk-ins both in and outside."

"I've dined at this SR location a few times every year since it opened, and this was probably the first time I left a little disappointed. In the past the food was stellar, from steaks thru dessert. This time, good not great -- steaks unevenly cooked and a little overdone; sides more simplified and heavy-handed in preparation. The only truly bad thing was a chocolate cake slice that nobody would take a second bite of. The ambiance is still welcoming and "upscale lodge" pleasant, but our table location was both too warm and too loud (although both may be due to the season.) Still, among the many high-end steakhouses that have become popular, I think this remains the better value and better experience."
