Chef Fred Neuville is excited to embark on his first solo venture. “With Fat Hen, I am striving to create a neighborhood restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and signature French-inspired Southern cuisine,” he says. “Johns Island is a fast-growing area and I believe island residents – along with others from around Charleston – will appreciate what we have to offer.” Fat Hen’s main dishes center around innovative French classics with Low country cuisine. The Braised Chicken features locally raised free-range chicken braised in red wine with rich bacon lardons, pearl onions & mushrooms. Fat Hen’s Short Ribs, a favorite signature dish among family and friends, is braised for hours in a rich veal broth. We also deal with local farmers to provide a great source of fresh farm vegetables to enhance your dining experience.

"Food and drinks here are reliably excellent. This is one of our favorites in the Charleston/Kiawah/Seabrook area for a relaxed, casual, delicious meal. Our only complaint is that it gets VERY NOISY, and it's hard to hear others at your table."

"Why do steak houses feel they have to serve such huge portions? I'm not a big fan of steak, so I left that to my husband, who said his steak was great and perfectly cooked. I had crab cocktail to start (so-so) and a tuna steak that was delicious but at least twice as big as it needed to be. I ate half and would have taken the other half with me but we were heading to the theater. Cheesecake for dessert was good, but we could have used a third person (and maybe a fourth) to help us eat it. We've decided that a steak house is not the place to go pre-theater...just too much rich food."

"The food here is excellent, the service very good but you have to be willing to put up with the way the sounds bounce off the windows, mirrors, wood floors, etc. Portions are small and prices are very high, but if price is no object, this is a great choice on the upper East side. We all had delicious salads, including one with what my husband said was the best soft shell crab he'd had all season. Fish and pasta entrees were small but beautifully presented and very tasty."

Chef Marc Collins draws inspiration from many cuisines around the world to create a menu that is truly unique to the Charleston restaurant scene. Drawing inspiration from historic Southern dishes and always highlighting what is local and in season, Chef Collins puts a healthful, distinctive spin on classic Lowcountry dishes. This means there is less butter and cream than typically seen on Southern menus. Whole grains are incorporated to dishes and ingredients are used at the peak of flavor. The result is satisfying dishes that retain their bright, bold flavors without the large amounts of fat found in many restaurant dishes. From our Plantation Rice Bread Rolls made in house daily, to the selection of local seafood, to Pastry Chef Lovorn’s incredible desserts, each dinner at Circa 1886 celebrates the region we call home. Let our professional, attentive, experienced and knowledgeable staff guide you through the menu and help select a wine that is a perfect pairing for food and budget.

"Don't go here if you're in a hurry. Fortunately, we were looking for a restaurant where we could linger. The kitchen takes its time with preparation and it shows. Salads were crisp and not overdressed. Antelope entree (their signature dish) was outstanding. Salmon was overcooked but the rest of the dish was delicious. Save room for dessert; they all sounded good. We had the fried angel food cake (quite good) and the blueberry/lemon cheesecake (to die for). Service was very good, if a little pretentious. Atmosphere is slightly formal. Ask for a booth if you want a romantic dinner. Outdoor dining looked very pretty though may be too hot and humid much of the year."

"A very good (though very expensive) choice for a pre-theater dinner before an event at Lincoln Center. They asked us when we arrived if we were going to an event and made sure all wait staff were aware of our timing and offered us the 3-course pre-theater menu. Service was excellent throughout the meal. Appetizers (risotto and duck foie gras rillette) were very good. Grilled cobia main course was slightly overcooked but tasty; roast suckling pig looked like a very small portion but proved to be quite filling. Dessert was the best course: coffee ice cream with bananas two-ways and sweetened cashews...outstanding."
