Theatergoer's Reviews

Chef Fred Neuville is excited to embark on his first solo venture. “With Fat Hen, I am striving to create a neighborhood restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and signature French-inspired Southern cuisine,” he says. “Johns Island is a fast-growing area and I believe island residents – along with others from around Charleston – will appreciate what we have to offer.” Fat Hen’s main dishes center around innovative French classics with Low country flourishes, sourced from the finest local produce farmers. Neuville’s tangy-but-tender BBQ Scallops are first marinated in a house-made pomegranate barbecue sauce, bacon wrapped and grilled to perfection. The Braised Chicken features locally raised free-range chicken braised in red wine with rich bacon lardons, pearl onions & mushrooms. Fat Hen’s Short Ribs, a favorite signature dish among family and friends, is braised for hours in a rich veal broth. In addition Fat hen offers catering services.

"Perfect location for a relaxed dinner after a day in Charleston. The drinks are outstanding (esp. low country lemonade, fat pepper, and all wines by the glass). I took two friends from out of town who loved the food, drinks, and casual vibe. We were all in the mood for shrimp so ordered the shrimp & grits, shrimp & crab, and fried shrimp entrees. All were very good. House salad to begin was perfect size for two to share. Our waitress (wish I could remember her name) was terrific. This is one of our favorite restaurants in the area."

"We were looking for a good restaurant near Madison Square Garden before an event there. This is the best we've found so far. I arrived before the rest of my party and they offered to seat me before the rest of my party arrived (some restaurants won't do this). I chose to sit at the bar - very pleasant experience and a delicious drink with prosecco, limoncello, and pomegranate juice. Dinner was excellent. Two of us had the chicken paillard. Usually when I order this it comes with salad on top, but the Niles version had perfectly cooked fresh vegetables on top (asparagus, green beans, carrots). The other two in our party had the duck, which they loved. Prices are high but well worth it. Only criticism: service was a little slow."

"Went here pre-theater and despite that fact that we told that to the person who seated us, the wait staff was nowhere to be seen for most of the evening. Fortunately, we had arrived early and finished in time. The food was good but not great. My friend had the cod which she said was very good. I had the Arctic char, which was somewhat dry though I had asked for it medium rare."

"Had brunch here before a Yale Rep play. May be the best place for lunch/brunch in New Haven. Kale frittata was outstanding. Deviled egg with French bread perfectly seasoned. Smoked trout was good but very salty. A nice selection of wines by the glass. The only downside to the experience was the VERY slow service, so take that into consideration if you have somewhere else to be after your meal. On the flip side, when we realized that the waitress had brought the wrong smoked trout dish (there were two on the menu), she very willingly took back the enormous kale salad we had ordered but realized we would not be able to eat, and she took the salad off our bill."

"The food here is some of the best we've had in the theater district. My salad (arugula, endive, pecans, apples) was fresh and tasty and not too much dressing. My husband had the pate and said it was ok. Entrees were outstanding: coq au vin for my husband was lighter than he expected but perfect for pre-theater; my roast chicken was perfectly cooked - moist and tender. The side order of brussels sprouts and salsify was delicious. Two issues: service was spotty (as often happens pre-theater in that area, it was very busy and the waiter disappears for a while) and the wines by the glass were very overpriced ($17 for a glass of Sancerre). Still, the quality of the food is outstanding and we were out in plenty of time for the theater."

"We chose Scarlatto because it is on the same block as the theater we were going to and were pleasantly surprised. My husband had a salad and the ravioli special which he very much enjoyed. I had polpetti (meatballs) as an appetizer, and they were the star of the evening - slightly spicy with a delicious tomato sauce and very thin slice of cheese on top. My only compaint is that it was too big as an appetizer. My chicken w/salad and roasted potatoes was good, not great. Next time I would have a salad to start and the meatballs as a main course. The banana tart shared as dessert was delicious and not too filling. We were in and out in a little over an hour but didn't feel rushed. We'll definitely eat here again pre-theater."
