Opened in 1999, and chosen by Gourmet Magazine in 2000 as one of "America's Best Restaurants," Johnny's Half Shell relocated to its present Capitol Hill location in September 2006. Renditions of Chesapeake and Gulf Coast Seafood remained the kitchen's focus, and the restaurant's new home maintained its homespun conviviality. Said Washingtonian Magazine, "The capitol dome shines in the background, a reminder of the new, more serious-minded neighbors who come here. But Johnny's still feels like home." In September 2007, New York Times dubbed the new venue a "Capital Gain" for Washington, DC.

Slightly North of Broad is a Lowcountry bistro that brings together an abundance of local ingredients and thoughtful, expert presentation with a friendly, contagious energy. Here the dining room is a natural extension of the kitchen, a place where culinary skill, a clever, considered wine program, warm service, and conversations meld together. Our local farmers, fishermen and producers are as integral to the food we make as they are to our place in this community.

"The only thing that marred our dining experience here was the unforgivably long wait beyond our reservation time before we got a table. We arrived right on time for our 8:30 PM reservation and were told it would be about a 10 minute wait. We went to the bar and ordered wine and, after 20 minutes, checked back with the hostess. She told us the diners at the table we were to have were lingering but we should be seated soon. At 9:10 PM we checked again and told the hostess we would be leaving if we were not seated right away. Finally, at 9:15 PM, 45 minutes after our reservation time, we got our table. The waiter was very apologetic and comped us two more glasses of wine. Excellent food and service, but the wait was frustrating."
