Boss Shepherd’s is Penn Quarter’s hottest farm-to-table restaurant, where guests can enjoy a fresh approach to traditional American cuisine. Named after DC’s original governor, who was often referred to as the Father of Modern Washington, Boss Shepherd was one of the most powerful city bosses in his day and was responsible for creating DC’s infrastructure, ultimately convincing Congress to continue to operate in the District of Columbia. A statue of Boss Shepherd reigns half a block away, in front of the John A. Wilson Building.

Instilled with Chef Jeremy Waybright’s southern inspiration, the menu boasts fresh takes on time-honored, rustic classics that can please the palate of any guest. Chef Waybright’s use of farm-to-table ingredients is evident in innovative starters such as the Maine blue mussels with sausage, cider beer, vermouth and pickled chili, or delectable bone marrow served with herbs, pickled egg, breakfast radish and toast.

"My office is one block from this place; I will surely never return, and have already encouraged my colleagues to follow suit.
Pot Pie fritters were not just cold, but frozen in the middle. Upon us informing our server, he let us know that the fritters were now "86ed" because they don't seem to be cooking correctly, and they would be taken off the bill (duh). We were offered fried oysters as a replacement.
Entrees took 1 hour to arrive.
Management made intolerant joke regarding my religion."

Avant features local organic ingredients paired with Central Coast wines. Established in 2009 as a tasting room and Tapas bar for the clients of the Terravant Wine Company, Avant strives to be a "local-centric" culinary destination offering food made with ingredients sourced from Santa Barbara County producers.

"The food, servers, and bartenders were so much fun. Nice live music. We had the yuppie crack and an off-menu pizza, the popper pizza, which consisted of candied jalepenos, bacon, chicken, and herb ranch dressing. They seem to be somewhat flexible and enjoy making these off-menu treats. The wine wall was so much fun - nice to be able to try wines before committing to a full glass (really liked the Complexity wines). We had a great time and would definitely return on our next trip from DC."
